Head west, young man!!
It’s been quite month since I last posted. We said “see ya soon” to our oldest and his wife in Biloxi and headed back to Little Rock. It was a quick week in Little Rock – we tried to get our RV roof fixed correctly since it still had wrinkles in it from three weeks earlier when they “replaced” it. Unfortunately, Camping World in North Little Rock did not succeed in fixing it correctly. After much disgust, we picked it up and headed to Manhattan Kansas to visit our other kids. Note – we do not recommend any repairs at Camping World in North Little Rock. (Ed. Note – I don’t even wanna talk about it!!!)
Well worth the price of admission!!
We are staying in a relatively new park outside of Junction City, Kansas. Smoky Hill RV Park opened last July and is a great little park! Each site is very large so when your RV is on the site, your outside patio area is not right next to your neighbors – we love this bit of privacy. The owner is a lovely woman (along with her husband) – very friendly! The office and laundry facilities are great and there is a nice size fenced dog park. My only complaint would be the traffic noise from I-70. It’s a bit annoying but not too bad that I wouldn’t stay here again. To the hubs delight, its also close to a nice 9-hole disc golf course 😊.
The kids are about a 20-minute drive away in Manhattan but it’s a nice little drive. We’ve been able to spend time with both of them alone and together and I have loved every minute of it! Below are some pictures from different disc golf courses (we’ve played a few) and a hike by my daughter’s favorite lake. (Ed. note – Disc golf is a great past time – perfect for all ages – I recommend it for any and every body!!!)
There is a reason that weekend is a national holiday!!!!
The hub’s birthday was May 29th so we planned a day just for him – disc golf, the Evel Knievel Museum, meatloaf and mashed potatoes and chocolate pound cake! The museum is in Topeka, about a 45 minute drive from Manhattan. Many wonder why there is an Evel Knievel museum in Topeka, Kansas since Evel was from Butte, Montana – that’s explained at the beginning. It’s quite a story and I’m going to let anyone interested check it out through the link – it all started with “Big Red”, the Mack truck that Evel Knievel traveled in along with his ramps and motorcycles, and an avid collector of all things Evel Knievel.
To this day, I believe he pulled the cord on the ‘chute!!!!!
The museum has original and replicas of motorcycles used to make his jumps, leather jumpsuits and helmets. There is a section showing all the Evel Knievel toys and memorabilia that sold in the late 60’s and 70’s – many I recognized and the hubs definitely owned a few! A skeleton which showed which bones Evel had broken, fractured, crushed, or had replaced was on display. Video clips showing his jumps – successful or not – were placed in different locations which were so fun to watch, especially with two kids who’ve only heard of Evel Knievel from their parents 🤣. I personally loved reading about his childhood (he was a holy terror) and the quotes of things he’d said throughout his career. Even though I wasn’t particularly excited about the museum, it ended up being a lot of fun. (Ed. Note – It’s a weird place for the museum but I highly recommend it!!!!)
Of course for us knitters, I’ve saved the best for last 😁! Look how cool this yarn is wound in the center!
So, bad news (for me) – I finished my Wispy shrug but the fit is just too small! Luckily, I love to knit so I just cast on another one with the extra yarn I had left over. I’ll probably have to unravel the first one but thought I’d start with the fun part of casting on and knitting.
Finally, I started on my uneek sock kit and it’s adorable! It has an after-thought heel which goes where the bright orange waste yarn is, only my second time to do an after-thought heel!! Can’t wait!
Also, a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my friend, Karen ❤
Thanks for the happy birthday shout out! Of course I noticed the date of your post! ❤️ Loved reading about the Evel Knievel museum! Spent many hours playing with the Norris boys and Evel toys!! Love you! Thanks for sharing your adventure with us and happy birthday to John!
