Winter is Coming!!!!
“I saw a dragon,” the hubs whispered as he came back into the trailer.
As I mentioned a couple of posts ago, the park that we are staying at is very nice. But this was a whole different level!!
“What?” I said, not quite sure I heard or understood him correctly. He can be mumbly.
“I saw a dragon,” he repeated, “Winter is coming!”
OK, now this was something else. He had just taken Alice and Rosie for a walk around the lake so he probably did see something. But I know him, he likes to embellish stories, so I rolled my eyes and said, “What? A log that looks like a dragon? A rock shaped like a dragon?”
“No, a dragon!”
“A lizard?”
“No, a dragon. You’ll have to come see it. Winter is coming!”
I agreed to see it another day, still assuming it was a drawing or stick or rock or something in the ground. So, the next day we decided to walk the dogs together and go to the “dragon”.
The park is in the flood zone for the Mississippi River, which bows south just north of the park. A huge levee sit behind us, protecting the city of St. Peters. Some smaller ones are on the other side of the lake. The rest of the land to the river is swamp and marsh.
There must be a million frogs, we can hear then croaking as we make our way to see this infamous dragon.
After about half a mile along the path, with wetlands on one side and marshland along the other, I SEE it – a DRAGON! {ED. NOTE – You shoulda seen the look on her face – priceless!!!}
It is a metal dragon head sculpture sticking up on the side of the wetland area! All by itself – no path around it, no sign saying why, just a dragon head sculpture down a small hill by the side of the wetlands. Crazy, huh? {ED. NOTE – I told ya!!!}
What’s wrong with American geese, why the Canada geese gotta take all the goose jobs??
We have completely enjoyed the Canada geese here. They float in the lake, scratch out bugs in the field next to us and honk occasionally. We’ve also seen many red-winged blackbirds and hear them chirping and singing frequently. For some reason, they have always been my favorite bird!
Well, this was unexpected!!
As we were sitting in our rig at dusk last night finishing dinner, something out the back window caught our attention. We thought it was a hawk that we had seen flying earlier in the evening. As I got up to look closer out the window, it swooped down to the lake and picked up a fish!
Then, at the same time, we both said, “I think that’s a bald eagle!” We continued to watch it fly into the field next to us, grabbed the binoculars and YES! It was a bald eagle, sitting in the field, eating his/her fresh caught fish. It would put its head down and pull off some fish, sit up, look around and go down for another bite. Through the binoculars we could see it so clearly about 150 yards away. It was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen! {ED. NOTE – The eagle is a frequent visitor to the park. It has a favorite tree – dead, barren – and spends most mornings in the top wowing visitors!!}
Now I have the song from “Pete’s Dragon” in my head!
