March 20, 2019 – Weaving Department at the Myers House, Florissant, Missouri (St. Louis)

Posted on March 28, 2019 by Pam

It’s like painting but with fabric!!!

I have a great friend, Lisa, who lived in Wentzville, Missouri who I am so lucky to visit with over the two weeks that we are in St. Louis!  Her home is just about 20 minutes away from our park.  She used to be one of our small group of knitters when I first started knitting over 14 years ago.  She moved on to quilting a while back and has made AMAZING quilts!  She has the creative ability to put together colors and patterns, something which I do not!

Weaving Department

We went to visit a lovely shop in Florissant, Missouri, Weaving Department Myers House.  I will be honest and say that we weren’t sure if this was a “yarn” shop or not.  We set off following GPS.  Where it said the shop was, we saw a red barn – now this was in town, not in a field 😊.  We pulled into a hotel next door and called to see if they were open.  The shop was actually located in an old house with the barn in the parking lot. The house was built in 1867 by John B. and Adelaide Motten Myers. Mrs. Myers completed the house after her husband’s death. The house was to be demolished in the 70’s to make way for Highway 270. After some controversy, the roadway was redesigned to keep the home intact. Read more on the history on Weaving’s website. The house was very cool – outside AND inside.

The shop had the entire first floor with different yarns, rovings, spinning wheels, looms, books and notions!  The yarns were organized by weight for the most part.  The front room was bulky and worsted, with Berroco and Galway.  I purchased some Berroco to knit Lisa a hat in a pink color that will go nicely with her winter coat for these COLD, snowy winters here! {ED. NOTE – The graphics department apologizes for not getting the tagline changed but we’re hoping the buying slows down and we get back to just visiting!!!!!!!!!!!!!}

As you meander through the different rooms, you see Malabrigo, Plymouth, Knit One Crochet Two, Opal, some local Alpaca yarn and to my complete delight, LOPI or officially, Lettlopi, an Icelandic yarn.
 I first heard about this yarn while reading a MDK post “Banging out a Stopover” and have been intrigued ever since.  This is the first time I’ve ever seen it in a shop!  It reminded me that it may be time to start thinking about learning fair isle… There was a nice group of knitting guild ladies knitting in the back having a good old time.  It was a fun place to visit!

    It was a fun day! And a gluten free bakery visit later in the day in honor of my GF child Sarah. Plus I get a cool hat knitted by one of the most talented knitters I know.

    Thanks for the reminder, Lisa! I should have mentioned the New Day Gluten Free bakery on Clayton Road! The menu was quite extensive and the daisy flower cookie we shared was FABULOUS! Also, Felix’s Pizza Pub needs a mention. The pizza by slice was very yummy (best I had in St. Louis) and the toasted ravioli was the BOMB! I had this popular St. Louis appetizer at 3 different locations and Felix’s was the BEST!
