October 2, 2019 – The Wooly Mammoth, Omaha, Nebraska

Posted on October 9, 2019 by Pam

If they bring them back like in Jurassic Park, maybe we’ll actually be able to knit with their fur!!!!!

Wow!  Again, another fun, fantastic yarn shop – The Wooly Mammoth in Omaha, Nebraska!  We left Junction City and headed to Omaha to visit our oldest son and daughter-in-law.  Of course I checked to see how many yarn shops were close by and found three.  We are only here for a short week, so I picked one to visit and couldn’t pass up a place called The Wooly Mammoth! (ED. NOTE – I think you mean buy stuff rather than visit!!!)

The shop has been open approximately 7 years but moved to this location around 2 years ago.  Diana is the third owner.  She told me she had shopped there for years and has a “thing” for mammoths.  When the shop came up for sale, she decided it was a good time to purchase it, but the shop owner already had a pending sale.  After a couple of weeks, Diana received a call from the owner who said the sale had fallen through!  So, the Wooly Mammoth had a new owner.  Being a mammoth lover for years and having a paleontologist for a daughter put Diana in the right place.  Soon mammoth decorating became a calling card at the shop.  On the front of the check out counter is a fabulous mammoth drawing, the shop business cards sit in a mammoth shaped holder and an adorable stuffed mammoth (made by the owner’s sister) sits on a shelf, along with other mammoth items.

Aren’t these charming!?!?!

My favorite thing was a little silver mammoth charm (or stitch marker) attached to each skein of Wooly Mammoth yarn dyed by Diana!  She had been dying yarn for a while but once the shop opened she was ready to start dying the Wooly Mammoth brand.  She bought a package of mammoth charms for an earlier excursion into jewelry making (like many of us, until we decide on the wonderful craft of KNITTING!).  Anyone who has made jewelry before knows that usually charms come in quantities of 50 or 100 – it’s hard to buy just 2 or 10 charms of anything.  When Diana began dying yarn for the shop, she told me she knew just what to do with all those mammoth charms!! Now she gets to buy more as the skeins fly off the shelves.

What’s in a name???  A mammoth of any other name would still smell as sweet!!!

Diana names her skeins related to the mammoth theme.  There are skeins named “Dawn of Time”, “The Last Hunt” and “Tundra”.  I bought a gorgeous skein of a jewel tone red which was named “Hunted”.  I have to admit, the name made me a little sad but I couldn‘t pass up the color!  (ED. NOTE – Well, is it better to the be the hunted or the hunter????)

The shop is a lovely, comfortable and open space with two couches facing each other in the center of the room.  On the left side of the room, the wall was completely covered with Wooly Mammoth yarn and other indy dyers!  I had only seen two of the dyers yarns before – all the others were new to me.  It was incredible. (ED. NOTE – Yeah, with as much yarn as you’ve bought over the years, I find it incredible too!!!)  I asked how she came to carry them in her shop and she said most she had been following them on Etsy.  When she opened the shop, she contacted them and asked if she could carry their yarn in her shop.  She carries other brands, too, arranged on the opposite wall of the shop.

The shop carries a small selection of needles and notions and has some wooden stitch markers that are quite fun (for those of us who like to be a little naughty) along with a Wooly Mammoth wooden stitch marker made especially for her shop.

I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Wooly Mammoth!   Be sure to stop in if you’re ever in Omaha!  I’ll get to the other 2 shops the next time I’m in town 😊. (ED. NOTE – I’m sure you will!!!!)
